Idunn, goddess of eternal youth, is the guardian of the apples of youth which are kept in a chest in her garden. The gods eat one of her apples when they feel they are getting old, allowing them to stay young until Ragnarök.
The story goes that the giant Thjazi, transformed into an eagle, took the goddess to his home to benefit from her apples. The gods, who without the apples began to age rapidly, threatened Loki to go and look for her. Loki, in the form of a hawk, sought out the goddess and found her alone in the giant's house. He turned her into a nut to take her in his talons. And he returned her to her place in Asgard, the realm of the Aesir gods, where the gods could live forever again.
