The Yggdrasil tree comes from Norse mythology. It bears the nine worlds that make up the Universe: the realm of the Aesir, the Vanes, the Light Elves, the Men, the Giants, the Dark Elves, the Mists and the Nibelungen, the Fire and finally the realm of the Dead.
An eagle at the top provokes the serpent Niddog to eat the tree's roots. The squirrel that runs through the branches of Yggdrasil fuels the hatred between the two belligerents. This world-tree symbolises the continuous struggle between life and the forces of destruction at work in the world. The Ragnarök, the end of the Nordic world, will shake the old ash tree to its core, but it will remain standing and from its roots the pair of new men will be born.
